"Seashell"
"Seashell"
“SeashellI” was carved by hand from a Guatemalan Blue Jadeite boulder. It is strung on black nylon cord with matching Guatemalan Blue Jadeite beads that slide to adjust cord length.
Note from the Artist: The design of a seashell is timeless. With its sleek spiral and feminine curves, I have always been attracted to its form, though its execution is difficult in regards to proportion. I enjoy the challenge of this form and I continue to be inspired by the ocean’s treasures.
This jade is a Guatemalan blue jadeite. It is said by pre-Columbian jade experts that jadeite was carved and appreciated long before the voyage and arrival of Columbus in 1492. Guatemalan jadeite has only been rediscovered in 1974 after the collapse of the pre-Columbian cultures. Now Guatemala is making a name for itself as one of the world’s most beautiful and fine-grained jadeites; this beautiful blue included.
Jadeite vs. Nephrite: Jadeite is much more rare thus more valuable than nephrite sometimes. Jadeite is primarily found in only two locations: Burma and Guatemala. There are a few exceptions with random locations with. low quality jadeite. Burma has been the leader for the world’s best jadeite. Guatemala has a rich jade culture through the Aztec, Olmec, and Mayan traditions.
