The Jade: This piece was found in Mendocino County on one of my grandfather’s oldest jade-hunting spots, buried in the mountainside with many green Serpentine boulders strewn about. I had found a small stream that had just a trickle, which lead me to this beautifully oxidized piece of jade that was semi-buried. I could see the rust colored rind sticking out of the black sand.
This piece is uncarved and was cut in a way that is meant to enhance it’s natural mountain range shape, in admiration of the Japanese style of Suiseki, meaning “viewing stone”.
Found in 2020.
The Base: Hand-carved Walnut
Dimensions: 1’ 1/4” H x 7” W x 6” D
